October 1813. In Pamplona, with the citadel under siege, Captain Pierre Laville dies without having accomplished the secret mission entrusted to him by Napoleon. Two centuries later, a French student contacts a Peninsular War expert at the Public University of Navarre to try and decipher a coded message about a treasure hidden in the city.
And so begins the story of a search that will involve the Franciscan brothers of St Francis Xavier, the Carlist general Tomás Zumalacárregui, the French writer Víctor Hugo and the communist leader Jesús Monzón. The goal is to find a priceless symbol of the Basque people.
